Background

Early Years

It was the winter of 2066. I was 10 years old with two loving parents and five older siblings, two brothers and three sisters. My parents and siblings were all human, but I was different. We lived in a small village outside Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East. There were other metahumans in the village, but not many. However, being an elf was not my problem. I still managed to make friends and get good grades in school.

Several months earlier, the town was abuzz over the deployment of the new wireless matrix infrastructure. I was interested, sure, but I knew our family was poor and the odds of me getting my hands on a new wireless commlink were slim to none. But as the new technology flooded the airwaves, something happened to me. At the time I didn't know it, but what I was feeling was the resonance of the matrix.

It's an impossible feeling to describe. My mental condition deteriorated rapidly; I simply couldn't control the flow of resonance, in fact it only seemed to get worse. I began to exhibit symptoms schizophrenia and withdrew from school. My parents were deeply concerned, but lacked the money for proper medical treatment. I remember seeing a few psychologists, who turned us away as quickly as we arrived.

I remember the day I was taken from my family like it was yesterday. It was was a bitter cold day, even by Siberian standards. A fresh layer of snow had fallen the night before. Just before sunrise, she woke me up and began packing a small suitcase for me. She was in tears the entire time. I did not understand what was going on, or where she was taking me. But as she drove along the Trans-Siberan Highway toward Vladivostok, I began to piece together what she was saying. She had found a doctor in Vladivostok who could help me.

I remember sitting in a room with my mother. Across the desk was a man in a dark suit and glasses. He and my mother had a conversation spanning almost an hour. I wish I could remember what was said. I remember throwing a fit as my mother left me. She kept telling me it would be okay, and that I would see her soon. She too was crying.

That was the last I ever saw her or my family.

Present

FATE was having no success recruiting a technomancer to their team, but Dr. Yau insisted that one was necessary. So they did what any corporation would do in the same situation -- they bought one. Rumors of technomancers being captured and experimented on by corporations have long been circulating on the matrix, and it turns out there is quite a market for them. FATE forked over a large sum of nuyen on this 16-year old kid, a big gamble for the organization.

Dmitri has been living with a caretaker assigned to him by FATE. The trauma of his abduction and experimentation has taken a great toll on him, but he has shown some signs of recovery. He lives a very active life in the matrix, but in the real world, he still needs assistance dressing himself and has not held much more than a simple conversation with someone. Nevertheless, he has agreed to work with FATE on assignments when they ask, as he feels in great debt to his rescuers. He has performed very well on several assignments so far.
